11 Plus Shropshire, Wolverhampton & Walsall
11+ Shropshire, Wolverhampton and Walsall
The Shropshire/Wolverhampton/Walsall Consortium is a group of grammar schools north of Birmingham that all use the same entrance test for 11 plus entry. The Shropshire/Wolverhampton/Walsall Consortium is part of the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership, a group of three consortiums in the West Midlands. All the schools in the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership use the same entrance test. This one selective entrance test means that with parental consent, results can be shared with all schools across the partnership. This means children no longer have to sit a different test for each school they wish to apply to, reducing stress and anxiety. The entrance test is provided by GL Assessment and consists of two papers each covering English comprehension, verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal/spatial reasoning. All questions are multiple choice format and answers are recorded on an Optical Mark Reading (OMR) answer sheet. The raw scores (the number of correct answers in each section) are converted to an age-standardised score to make allowance for the child's age at the time of the test and to ensure that younger children are not disadvantaged.
When you register your child for the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test you must specify all of the schools you would like your child's results to be shared with. If you do not select a school on the application form then that school will not be able to consider your application, even if you later list the school on the Local Authority preference form. The schools in the partnership have a 3 day window over a weekend (Saturday to Monday) in September to administer the entrance test. Please check the specific school below for dates.
Madeley Academy is a non-selective school that operates a banding process if it is oversubscribed. The banding assessment is used to ensure that the Academy admits the full range of ability of applicants, children cannot 'fail' the test. The banding assessment is a one hour non-verbal reasoning assessment taken in November. Thomas Telford School also invites applicants to a non-verbal reasoning banding assessment to ensure places are filled from the full range of ability of applicants. The assessment is usually held in mid-October.
